Homewood, AL – Alabama's senior congressman, Spencer Bachus, has drawn three opponents in his race for re-election to the Congressional seat he has held for nearly 20 years.
State Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale said Thursday he would challenge Bachus in the Republican primary on March 13. Beason was a sponsor of Alabama's tough new immigration law.
Also Thursday, two candidates announced they would run for the Democratic nomination for the seat. Retired Air Force Col. Penny Hudgins Bailey and former federal government employee William G. Barnes qualified to run as a Democrat for the 6th Congressional District seat.
Bailey of Leeds served in the Air Force for 24 years. She said she will put professionalism before partisan politics if elected. Barnes is a former U.S. Senate candidate. Bailey and Barnes are the first Democrat to qualify to run in the 6th District race.
