Alabama ranks near the top of the country for new COVID cases

Only four other U.S. states are doing worse than Alabama when it comes to COVID-19 cases per capita. A report by Johns Hopkins University puts Alabama ranked behind Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida for the most new cases per capita in the past two weeks. Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo is director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He made headlines following an interview with CNN when she stated that Alabama is near what she called a COVID “apocalypse.” The State ran out of intensive care beds last week. Marrazzo says the Gulf States continue to be on fire with COVID-19 cases. Medical officials say they hope full federal approval of the Pfizer vaccine will persuade people to get vaccinated. Alabama has one of the lowest vaccinations rates in the country. The State AG’s office says schools and businesses can’t require proof of vaccination. However, AG Steve Marshall conceded that businesses can mandate that their workers must have their shots.
