State Agencies to Block Refugees, "Young Frankenstein" at UA

Governor Bentley
Alabama Governor Robert Bentley

Alabama’s Governor Robert Bentley is putting his rhetoric against Syrian refugees settling in the state into action.

The governor has directed state agencies to try to block the relocation of any Syrian refugees in Alabama.

Bentley signed an executive order Monday after announcing his opposition to Syrian refugees settling in Alabama over the weekend. The order directs state agencies to use all "lawful means" to prevent the resettlement of refugees.

Bentley is one of several governors nationwide fighting the relocation of Syrian refugees to their states, citing concerns about terrorism after the Paris attacks. However, immigration experts say states don't have any legal authority to prevent resettlement.

Director of the Georgia chapter of the International Rescue Committee J.D. McCrary said Monday that refugee placements are handled by the U.S. State Department.

So far, no Syrian refugees have been relocated to Alabama.

If you know what happens after you say the phrase “Frau Blucher,” then there’s a theater production you might like.

The University of Alabama Theatre & Dance companies are putting on the stage version of Young Frankenstein. The musical comedy is based on the Mel Brooks film starring Gene Wilder and Madeleine Khan.

Jamie Schor is the marketing and public relations manager for UA’s theater and dance programs. He says even young audiences should get the jokes from this 1970’s classic.

“With Mel Brooks, I think with his style of comedy, I mean, he’s universal. I think whether you’re two or you’re ninety-two, you know who Mel Brooks is, and as far as the comedy goes, it goes in the same way as well.”

The show runs nightly until Friday along with a matinee Sunday afternoon. You can get tickets at ua.tix.com.

Alabama junior defensive end Johnathan Allen is the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week. Allen had seven tackles including three sacks and a forced fumble in Saturday’s 31 to 6 win over Mississippi State.

Coach Nick Saban says he’s watched Allen progress during his time in a Crimson Tide uniform and is proud of his defensive end.

“He’s always been very athletic and had great first-step quickness. He does a great job of using his hands and moving his feet which is really critical in being a good pass rusher. He’s got enough pop now to turn speed to power on people as well as enough quickness to get by them. So that’s usually is the combination that makes a really good pass rusher.”

In addition to Allen, junior running back Derrick Henry was the SEC Offensive Player of the Week after amassing 204 yards and four touchdowns on the ground against the Bulldogs.

Alabama hosts Charleston Southern University Saturday at 3 p.m. on the SEC Network.
