Prosecutors oppose early release for former Alabama House Speaker

APR

Prosecutors are opposing the request by a former Alabama House Speaker to be released early from prison.

Mike Hubbard filed a request last week asking to be released one year into his 28-month sentence. While Hubbard apologized in his request, prosecutors do not see his remorse as a reason for him to be released. Prosecutors noted Hubbard’s apology came after his failed appeals.

Hubbard is serving time in prison for six ethics violations. He was originally indicted with 23 charges in 2014, and later convicted of 12. Subsequent court rulings brought the number of charges down to six. Hubbard was accused of enriching himself while in office through consulting contracts. His release date is set for Jan. 8, 2023.
