The Rocket City is looking to extend its tech industry following the construction of a data center for Facebook.
Two of the center’s six buildings opened online on Wednesday morning.
The opening was celebrated with a $300,000 donation to Huntsville’s U.S. Space and Rocket Center. The center is part of the network’s $1 billion commitment to the city of Huntsville. It is set to be run entirely on renewable solar energy and will invite 200 more jobs to the local job market.
Facebook made an initial announcement to take shop in North Alabama in 2018. The network also reported in June 2021 that the center would cost $750 million and provide only 100 jobs. However, the social media giant surpassed its initial goal and price tag.
The construction of the center is part of Facebook’s recent tradition in growing the world of science and technology among Madison County and its school system. It has already donated nearly $1 million to Madison County schools for student technology in 2020. The Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering has also received $100,000 from the network for the expansion of its STEM classes.
The data center is set to be finalized and completed in 2024. Construction on the third building already started this summer.
