Community marks 20th anniversary of Alabama mine disaster

encyclopediaofalabama.org

The 20th anniversary of a mine blast that killed 13 people in west Alabama was marked with a remembrance ceremony Thursday afternoon.

The Alabama Miner's Memorial Foundation hosted the event at a church in Brookwood.

The deadly explosion happened on Sept. 23, 2001 at the Jim Walters Resources Mine No. 5. Workers were about 2,000 feet below the surface when a battery charger ignited highly flammable gas, causing two explosions.
