The city of Birmingham will soon start paying single mothers.

Mayor Randall Woodfin proposed the plan that was approved by the City Council on Tuesday.

A nonprofit called Mayors for a Guaranteed Income provided a $500,000 grant to pilot the program. Up to 110 single mothers who apply will receive $375 in monthly payments through the program.

Birmingham is the first Alabama city to join the program.
