The U.S. Department of Agriculture has added Alabama and eight other states for free school lunches. The program helps students receiving Medicaid coverage have something to eat each day. Alabama and the eight new states will be automatically added to nineteen state offering free or reduced-price school lunches. The new list of participating states includes Alabama, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The department says this expands demonstration projects that have certified more than one million students for free lunches. Over an additional quarte million will qualify for reduced-price meals. Organizers says the twenty seven states now involved represent about 75% of students nationwide.
