Expect more drivers on the roads this holiday season

Christmas is right around the corner and Alabama’s roadways are expected to be packed. The number of people travelling this year is predicted to rise close to pre-pandemic levels this winter. Nationwide travel is set to increase by 34% more than last year.

Clay Ingram is spokesman with the organization. He said people need to be prepared for packed highways before they go on the road.

“So when you combine the holiday travelers with the shoppers and you know the people that are just out heading to work and back every day too, it all adds up," he said. "It ends up having some really crowded highways and roadways.”

Ingram said it is extremely important that drivers get their cars checked any problems before going out on the road.

“We always encourage people to get their cars checked out ahead of time before they get on the road to prevent any potential breakdowns," he said. "Things like belts and hoses tend to deteriorate from the inside out, and they look fine from the outside, but could be about to put you on the side of the road.”

Triple A predicts over 109 million people will travel this holiday season. The southeastern portion of the country is expected to be one of the most travelled corridors this time of year.
