Outgoing Alabama U.S. Senator Doug Jones among names for Biden’s AG

Alabama League of Women Voters

Outgoing Alabama U.S. Senator Doug Jones may not be moving back to our state just yet. The Democratic lawmaker is reportedly under consideration as U.S. Attorney General in the Biden administration. Jones gained a reputation as a civil rights champion when he successfully prosecuted two of the attackers in the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham. As a U.S. Senator, Jones continues to push for a follow-up COVID-19 financial aid package.

“At the end of the year, without any Congressional action, emergency unemployment will end, the eviction moratorium will end, student loan forbearance will end,” said Jones during a November 18th press conferfence. “And this is all going to come at a time when we’re still struggling to get the economy moving in the right direction."

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and current U.S. Senate leader Mitch McConnell are reportedly talking again about some kind of bi-partisan relief package. Pelosi and Senator Minority leader Chuck Schumer area in favor of a $908 billion dollar proposal. Senator Jones says something has to be passed soon.

“I think as we continue to see the economic stress, not the complete downturn that we saw in March, but the stress that we’re under—We’ve got to do more for businesses, we need to do things for state and local government,” the Senator said.

Jones lost his Senate seat to Tommy Tuberville during the November election. Other names reportedly in consideration for Attorney General include former deputy AG Sally Yates and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez.
