Selma Trip/Sarah
October 21, 2015
With service trips becoming a growing trend, many students jump on the opportunity to travel around the country. But one group of students at the University of Alabama volunteered to give up their time off from school to serve others in a unique way. APR’s Sarah Rumfelt has the story.
While many UA students head to the beach for their mid semester breaks, twelve are heading to Selma. Students will partner with elementary school children there. Through various programs, they will work to promote education, leadership and nonviolence. UA sophomore Dwyer Freeman is heading the trip. After her summer of service in Selma, Freeman says she is looking forward to going back.
“Selma changed me a lot last year and made me realize, wow, there are some big issues and wow, I can do something to change them,”
Freeman says. Selma was the setting of numerous civil rights movements and brutal violence. The students will have the opportunity to see the sites of these tragic events.
“Living in East Selma, where Dr. Martin Luther King walked, like that’s really cool, and it doesn’t; it takes a while for it to hit me,”
Freeman says. The trip is part of the program Beyond Bama and will take place October 28-31.
