Southern Baptists Still Support War Effort

By Associated Press

Nashville, TN – The head of public policy for the Southern Baptist Convention said an overwhelming majority of Baptists still support President Bush and his handling of the Iraq war. In an interview with The Associated Press, Richard Land said the war hasn't significantly eroded the president's support. Land noted that exit polls show about 84 percent of Southern Baptists voted for Bush in 2004. But recent polls show Republicans losing ground with moderate evangelicals. Land said -- quote - I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Iraq yet. Land is the president of the Washington, D-C-based Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, the convention's public policy arm. The Nashville-based S-B-C is the largest Protestant denomination in the U-S with over 16 million members.
