Two Bryce Staffers Faces Neglect Charges in Patient Death

By Associated Press

Tuscaloosa AL – Two Bryce Hospital employees have been arrested and charged with abuse and neglect of a resident at the mental health facility who died in October.

Shirley Margie Neil, 51, of Northport, and Deborah Lynn Davis, 44, of Tuscaloosa, were both charged Thursday and released from Tuscaloosa County Jail on $10,000 bail. A potential penalty for a conviction was not immediately available.

It was unknown Saturday if Neil and Davis had hired an attorney.

Tuscaloosa District Attorney Tommy Smith said the charges stem from the death of Lewis Mills. Further details on Mills' death were not immediately available.

Dr. John Zeigler, spokesman for the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Retardation, said Friday that he couldn't comment on the arrests.

Terry Fenderson, the mental health department's lead investigator in the case, also declined comment.
