Another Inmate Killed at Elmore Prison
Yet another inmate has been killed at a state prison near Montgomery.
An Alabama Department of Corrections statement says 36-year-old DeMarko Quinta Carlisle was stabbed to death during an altercation at Elmore Correctional Facility yesterday. The agency has a suspect, but officials aren't releasing that prisoner's name. They say the motive isn't known.
Carlisle was serving a life sentence after being convicted of robbery in Jefferson County in 1999. Carlisle is the second inmate to be killed at Elmore prison in 10 days. Grant Mickens was stabbed to death in the prison on Feb. 16. That same day, another inmate was killed at Staton prison, about a mile away. Prison officials say the killings aren't related.
Alabama prisons are notoriously overcrowded and understaffed. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley and some lawmakers are advocating an $800 million bond issue to construct new prisons and close older ones.
