Tales from one of Alabama’s most beloved storytellers will be brought to life today on a New York City stage.

Birmingham playwright Don Everett Garrett has written an adaptation of a book by legendary Alabama author and storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham. Garrett’s “13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey: The Musical” will be read at the American Theater of Actors, John Cullum Theater, in New York City, by players from the Actors Equity Union.

Garrett tells al.com this is the first of three steps to bringing the play to families as an off-Broadway musical. After the reading and funds are raised, the show will be workshopped in New York or possibly at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery.

The musical features an actress portraying Kathryn Tucker Windham, and it reportedly uses her real voice to introduce the show.

Windham was a longtime contributor to Alabama Public Radio.
