Rural Alabama electric cooperative hit by ransomware attack

An Alabama power provider was hit with a ransomware attack, leaving customers without access to their account information.

Wiregrass Electric Cooperative announced Friday that there was no data compromised by the attack, but member account information and payment systems were taken offline for maintenance as a precaution.

The source of the attack has not been released. Similar attacks hit thousands of organizations across 17 countries last week, but the problems at Wiregrass were said to be unconnected.
