Contenders who want to run for a State House seat in Montgomery have some paperwork to do. The filing deadline for the upcoming race for State House District 76 is today. The special election will fill the seat held by Representative Thad McClammy who passed away in August.

A primary election will be held on Nov. 16 with the general election next March.

John Merrill is the Alabama Secretary of State. He said third party candidates have a more time to qualify.

“If there is a third party or an independent candidate that would like to be considered, that individual has until the close of business on Tuesday November the 16 to submit the appropriate number of signatures in order for them to gain ballot access,” he said.

The deadline to qualify for the election for major party candidates is Sept. 14. Merrill said he does not anticipate many people to run for the seat.

“I would say that that number is low simply because we have not had a lot of interest in other special elections that had been held recently," he said. "In Tuscaloosa, recently, we only had one candidate qualify in either major party.”

Merrill said McClammy’s daughter plans on announcing her candidacy for the seat.
