National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week ends this weekend, and one Montgomery organization is collecting blankets throughout the month to help the homeless during the winter season.

The Mid- Alabama Coalition for the Homeless is hosting a blanket drive throughout Montgomery. The Coalition for the Homeless works to assist Montgomery’s growing population that lacks stable housing, and organizers in the coalition say that help is especially needed in Winter months.

Lydia Pickett, the Executive Director of the Coalition, said that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased homelessness in Montgomery.

“People experiencing homelessness are really people like the two of us,” Pickett said. “Something happens and there really was not a complete support system that could really catch that event… and then something else happened and it just made it harder and harder for that person to come out of homelessness.”

The Coalition is collecting blankets, coats, hats, scarves, and other winter wear at three locations in the Montgomery area this Saturday, Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., which will be the final day of the drive. Items can be donated at the Coalition’s offices, Vaughn Park Church of Christ, and the Montgomery location of Dreamland BBQ.
