The chance to be creative and win a $500 cash prize is closing this week.

The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama will close submissions for the “Imagine Alabama” mural contest on Friday, Feb. 4. The competition is open for Alabama college students ages 18 to 24.

Estes Hughes is the director of talent and innovation for EDPA. She said the point of the competition is for contestants to visualize what they think is the best of Alabama.

“What we're hoping there is to really engage people from across the state and see what they feel is reflective of the talent in Alabama and reflective of the spirit of the state,” said Hughes.

She also said the artwork will be important to showcase for both workers of the organization and visiting partners.

“Hopefully for us and for all of those relationships and all of those partners, it will be inspiring as to what Alabama can be and what the people in Alabama believe it is and the potential it has,” said Hughes.

Finalists will have their artwork posted online for the public to vote on until later this month.

A social media poll for the winner will be conducted from Feb. 11 to the 18. The favorite finalist will be declared the winner on Feb. 21.

Hughes said the EDPA hopes to have the winner’s work display in their Birmingham office by April of this year.
