The second of two new nuclear reactors for the Georgia Power Company’s number four unit at Plant Vogtle has entered commercial operation. Utilities in parts of Alabama as well as Jacksonville, Florida, as well as in the Florida Panhandle also have contracted to buy Vogtle's power.

Regulators have unanimously approved an additional 6% rate increase to pay for remaining costs at Georgia Power Company's Plant Vogtle. The rate increase is projected to add $8.95 a month to a typical residential customer's current monthly bill of $157. Some Alabama electricity providers have contracted to buy power from Vogtle.

Workers have begun loading radioactive fuel into a second new nuclear reactor in Georgia, utilities said Thursday, putting the reactor on a path to begin generating electricity in the coming months. Some Florida and Alabama utilities have also contracted to buy Vogtle's power.
