Gov. Robert Bentley has declared a state of emergency in response to a severe weather system that crossed the state.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley is maintaining a large fundraising lead over Democratic challenger Parker Griffith.

The Republican incumbent has raised more than $5 million in contributions in his quest to win a second term.

Campaign fundraising reports filed Wednesday show that Bentley added more than $400,000 to his campaign war chest in August.

Griffith raised $12,920 in August. Griffith has received $35,557 in cash contributions since announcing his challenge to Bentley. Griffith has loaned his campaign $367,000. The loans account for the bulk of his campaign funds.

Griffith, a radiation oncologist, is a former congressman and former state senator. Bentley, a dermatologist, is a former member of the Alabama House of Representatives.
