Police in Mississippi continue investigating the deaths of two students attending Ole Miss. Detectives The stimulant powder known as kratom were reportedly found at the locations of both fatalities. Investigators don't know if kratom contributed to either death, but the incidents have helped to put the drug back in the news. Alabama has listed kratom as a Schedule one controlled substance, the same league as heroin and opioids.

The U.S. Department of Justice says a Minnesota man pleaded guilty this week to distributing Fentanyl that resulted in the death of an Alabama man. Prosecutors say Christopher Bass used the U.S. Postal Service to mail the drugs to Dr. Louis Burgio of Tuscaloosa in 2022, and that the Fentanyl was counterfeit Oxycontin. Burgio was later found dead.

Approximately 40 people with connections to multiple states and Mexico were arrested Tuesday after a four-year federal investigation exposed multiple drug trafficking operations in east Mississippi, federal prosecutors announced. The suspects include at least one person in Alabama.
