University presidents representing the Southeastern Conference reportedly still plan to meet today. The gathering was initially to consider possibly expelling LSU, which was considering the inclusion of two former college players who signed contracts with the NFL. Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin, who had previously worked as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban, was viewed by a key instigator of the controversy.

LSU coach Lane Kiffin’s chances of fielding former NFL players improved Thursday night when a Louisiana judge issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA in a high-profile eligibility case. The "paint or get off the ladder" point is expected today when Kiffin submits his football team roster to the SEC.

It was well into the second quarter before Alabama scored its first touchdown against LSU. But, the Tide widened the gap during the remainder of the game as the team delivered its best defensive effort in Southeastern Conference play this season and beat LSU 20-9 on Saturday night, keeping the Tigers out of the end zone for the first time since the 2012 national championship game.

The Louisiana State University Tigers fired coach Brian Kelly following a blow-out loss to Texas A & M. That 49-25 walloping on Saturday dropped the Tigers out of the AP rankings. LSU’s second quarter lead was short-lived, as Texas A&M went on to outscore them 35-7 in the second half. That means the Crimson Tide may spend this weekend off wondering which LSU it will face when Alabama resumes play on November 8th. The Tigers’ running backs coach Frank Wilson will step in for Kelly.

The annual Alabama-LSU rivalry is Exhibit A this weekend for how the expanded College Football Playoff has changed what constitutes a high-stakes game in November. Both teams have two losses and neither has a top 10 ranking.
