TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Two Georgia men have been arrested on felony drug and prostitution charges after an undercover human trafficking operation at an Alabama motel. 

The Tuscaloosa News reports that 25-year-old Isaiah Rashaud Williams and 26-year-old Demetrius Lamonallen Wright, both of Cairo, Georgia, were arrested Friday in Tuscaloosa.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness month. Advocates, organizations and individuals unite to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking across the country. An Alabama audience recently heard from a trafficking survivor who gained national attention and advocacy from celebrities, but the road to freedom for Cyntoia Brown has been rocky and controversial.

For the past 14 months, the Alabama Public Radio news team has been investigating human trafficking throughout the state.  So far most of the focus has been on sex trafficking. Another major part of human trafficking is labor.

About a half dozen students are gathered at Auburn University’s campus in Montgomery watching the documentary “Assault on Gay America.” It tells the story of how Billy Jack Gaither was beaten to death with an axe handle. The message is, in Alabama, violence against gay people is not a hate crime.

Randolph Co. Courthouse

Members of the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce are hosting an event to learn about human trafficking this evening.

The workshop will take place at the county courthouse in Wedowee, Ala. It will examine how people, including children, become ensnared by sex and labor traffickers.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama House of Representatives has passed legislation allowing mugshots of people charged with soliciting prostitutes to be published.

It was one of two bills approved Wednesday aimed at combatting human trafficking.

The bill says the mugshot may be published in any printed or electronic media.

The other legislation would up the financial penalties certain bars, hotels and gas stations could face if they fail to post human trafficking hotline information.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — A grand jury is set to hear the case of a Georgia man accused of threatening to share explicit photos of several Alabama women if the women didn't meet him for sex.

Human Trafficking Subject of Performace This Weekend

The Alabama School of Fine Arts will present its production of Innocent Flesh Friday and Saturday. The play centers on victims of human trafficking. 

The production stars five high school students. They are only a few years older than the characters they play.

Susan McCain is directing the play. She says Alabama’s interstate 20 is considered the superhighway of human trafficking and she hopes this show raises awareness.
