Xiaoqin Yan, a citizen of China, was convicted last year on charges of arson and illegal possession of a firearm. At the time of her arrest, Yan had overstayed her non-immigrant visa and, therefore, could not lawfully possess a firearm. Her visa was revoked after her arrest.

The history of slavery in America is the focus of a new sculpture park in Montgomery, Alabama. The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park honors the millions of people who endured slavery's brutality. The park opening March 27 is the third site created by the Equal Justice Initiative, which is dedicated to taking an unflinching look at the nation's history.

The City of Montgomery’s $36.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Neighborhood Access and Equity will expand transportation options and enhance access to essential services like jobs, education, healthcare, food, and recreation. Funding for the program was allocated in President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

The Equal Justice Initiative has unveiled a new statue honoring civil rights legend Rosa Parks at Legacy Plaza, across from the Legacy Museum in downtown Montgomery.The sculpture of Mrs. Parks is the first of three statues that will be erected in Legacy Plaza in the coming months.

The Montgomery Zoo is hosting an early Valentine’s Day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 10. It’s called Sweetheart’s Day. This special event is taking place during the zoo’s regular hours. One children’s ticket is free with the purchase of an accompanying adult ticket.

Dexter Scott King, who dedicated much of his life to shepherding the civil rights legacy of his parents, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, died Monday after battling prostate cancer. He was 62. The third of the Kings' four children, Dexter King was named for the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery.
