MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A member of the Alabama House of Representatives says she is resigning to join the Trump administration. 

Rep. April Weaver announced her resignation in a statement Tuesday. Weaver says she is quitting to accept a position with President Donald Trump's administration, but she didn't elaborate. She says she is excited to be able to use her skills and experience on a national level.

An Alabama inmate who escaped from a state prison four months ago is now back in custody.

Citing the state department of corrections, news outlets report 50-year-old Kevin Bradley Nelson surrendered to deputies in Chilton County on Tuesday. The agency says Nelson was serving two years at a state prison for receiving stolen property when he escaped in August.

Details surrounding his escape and what prompted his surrender were unclear as of early Wednesday.

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida have captured one of two inmates who tunneled their way out of an Alabama jail.

Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon says they escaped Sunday after breaking apart a steel stool inside a cell and using it as a tool to chip away concrete from around a window to the outside.

Storms Hit Central Alabama

Storms have damaged buildings and caused power outages in central Alabama.

The storms hit downtown Clanton in Chilton County Monday afternoon.

Chilton County Emergency Management Director Derrick Wright says straight-line winds caused the damage.  

The roof collapsed on a barber shop and some traffic lights were out after the storm. Some trees were also down. There also were reports of pea-sized hail.

Alabama Power reported over three hundred customers were without power Tuesday morning.

No serious injuries have been reported.

A former police chief in central Alabama has pleaded guilty to violation of an ethics law and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Brian Allan Stilwell was charged for crimes he committed between 2010 and 2015. Stillwell was Police Chief of the Clanton Police Department at the time. He was also treasurer of the Chilton County Fraternal Order of Police.

Prosecutors accused Stillwell of using the Fraternal Order’s bank debit card to take money for personal use. He was also accused of using his position as police chief to take money from the Police Department.

Alabama judges hope a federal court hearing today in Mobile clears up the confusion regarding same-sex marriage.

At least 22 of the state's 67 counties are issuing licenses for same-sex marriages, but the majority are not.

Chilton County Probate Judge Bobby Martin says it's been a difficult week due to the conflicting orders from federal courts and Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore.
