LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — All three NBA playoff games scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed, with players around the league choosing to boycott in their strongest statement yet against racial injustice. 

Called off: Games between Milwaukee and Orlando, Houston and Oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland. The NBA said all three games would be rescheduled, yet did not say when.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Protestors wrote “Black Lives Matter” and “Expand Medicaid” in front of the Alabama Capitol during a demonstration on Thursday. 

The painting happened during a press conference and demonstration by the Alabama SaveOurselves Movement for Justice and Democracy. The group holds regular press conferences advocating for the expansion of Medicaid in the state.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama police chief says one of his officers has been fired after posting a photo on social media that depicted a protester in the crosshairs of a rifle scope. 

Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis says former Officer Ryan Snow was fired Friday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Charges of inciting a riot have been dropped against an Alabama comedian who spoke at a rally following the police killing of George Floyd and was accused of helping spark unrest in Birmingham. 

Jermaine “FunnyMaine” Johnson was arrested on the misdemeanor charge and released after posting $500 bond.

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (AP) — Officials in a majority black county say they hope to permanently remove a now-covered Confederate memorial erected more than a century ago in the town square. 

Macon County Commission Chairman Louis Maxwell said at a news conference Friday that officials are researching ways to move the statue that sits in the town square of Tuskegee. Crews covered up the base of the statue after it was vandalized with anti-Ku Klux Klan graffiti last week.

 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama comedian who spoke at a rally following the police killing of George Floyd was arrested on a charge of inciting a riot by police who contend he helped spark a night of unrest in Birmingham. 

An attorney for Jermaine Johnson says he surrendered to police on the misdemeanor charge on Tuesday and paid a $500 bond. The lawyer says Johnson is not guilty.

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama police chief says out-of-town anarchists escalated tensions during a demonstration that led to police using tear gas and rubber bullets on the crowd. 

Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray said at a Thursday news conference that some people in the crowd were prepared to fight officers at the Wednesday night demonstration in downtown Huntsville.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Police in northern Alabama appeared to use smoke and pepper spray, or another chemical agent, to sweep protesters out of the courthouse square in Huntsville. 

Video of the chaotic scene streamed by WHNT, WAFF and other media outlets showed law enforcement agents wearing gas masks and riot gear advancing on the crowd after protesters refused an order to leave the area.
