Small businesses in Alabama are looking to get an economic boost from holiday cheer. COVID-19 is changing the holiday shopping experience at a time when mom-and-pop shops are on a thin lifeline from the pandemic.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — State health officials are urging people to serve up a heaping side of precaution at Thanksgiving.

The national holiday comes during a national surge in COVID-19 cases. Health officials are urging people to skip large family gatherings in favor of scaled-back events.

Not all Thanksgiving treats are on the dinner table.   One special treat can be found at the Alabama Theatre the day after Thanksgiving, as the Birmingham Ballet presents the "Mutt-cracker" with live dogs performing alongside the dancers.  They call it a new twist on a "classic tail"!

As many of us plan our elaborate Thanksgiving meals this week, it’s important to remember that there are also many of us who don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that centers around eating, but a lot of the food we enjoy can pose health risks for our furry friends.  Protecting your pet from some of the common food hazards can help to keep you at home enjoying family, friends and football, and not making an emergency trip to the veterinarian!

Sharing Thanksgiving foods with your best friend (or friends) is fine, as long as you make sure it's safe for them.  Just give them small amounts, and they will enjoy the treat!

The family of a woman who was killed in an explosion at the Ultratec pyrotechnics factory in north Alabama has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.

Reports indicate the family of Virginia Marie Sanderson filed the lawsuit yesterday. The family is seeking an unspecified amount of damages from the company. Sanderson was one of two employees killed in February's explosion at the Owens Cross Roads facility just south of Huntsville.

Downtown Rescue Mission

The city of Huntsville is working to make the holiday season special for local families.

Every year the Downtown Rescue Mission helps the homeless and families in need during the Thanksgiving holidays. The Mission provides Thanksgiving boxes filled with items to prepare a Thanksgiving meal. The boxes include a frozen turkey, stuffing, yams, a fruit cocktail and rolls.

Tonia Beverly is the Director of Events and Business Partnership at the Downtown Rescue Mission. She says that these packages give families something to be thankful for during the holidays.

It might be tempting to include your best friend when you sit down to the table this Thanksgiving, but some things on your plate could harm your furry buddy.  Be careful and choose treats that are pet-friendly and will make you both thankful for tasty morsels and great companionship!

A lot of us really enjoy the Thanksgiving tradition of good food shared with our loved ones, but this holiday maybe we shouldn't share quite so much with our four-footed family members.
